As I shared in previous posts. Wade and I (and the pups) absolutely LOVED our vacation in Maine this passed fall. It was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Our home base was on beautiful Green Lake located in Ellsworth, ME. Over the course of the week we had plenty of chance to explore Ellsworth and the surround areas and found it to be perfect. See why we loved it so much below with our top reasons why staying in Ellsworth Maine is the best.
Union River Lobster Pot
We did not eat out much for dinner during our Maine stay. Opting for cozy dinner’s in the cabin (recap here) over driving into town, but our favorite meal of the trip was at Ellsworth’s popular Union River Lobster Pot. You guessed it, Union River Lobster Pot is located right along Union River with great views. Now what to order. I recommend ordering the fresh mussels as an appetizer (amazing). For the main course you have to get one of the lobster pot dishes. We went with the smaller option, Maine Lobster Dinner which included hot boiled lobster cooked outside in salt-water cookers and served with hot drawn butter, French fries, Cole slaw, and homemade bread. The lobster sizes range from 1 1/8 lb up to 5 lbs for your to choose from. Save room for a slice of their blueberry pie- a Maine favorite!
Airline Brewing Company- Pub
Let me just say, Airline Brewing Company-Pub was awesome. We were short on time and considered skipping this place, but we are so glad we squeezed a visit in. Airline Brewing Company-Pub is located in Downtown Ellsworth on the charming Main Street. The interior is decorated in true old English Pub style with an impressive line up of craft beers. We had a short amount of time before dinner (had to get to Union River Lobster Pot early to avoid a long wait) and ordered flights so we could try the brews. We tried some of the traditional English ales, stouts and even some of the ciders. Great selections here. The food menu looked mouthwatering, we will be sure to give the grub a try during our next visit.
Ellsworth’s Adorable Downtown
Ellsworth is full of great stops, but the downtown area is beyond charming. The main street has cute restaurants, shops, a beautiful town hall and historic theatre. It really reminded me of our Main Street in Downtown Frederick, MD. So cute!
Plethora of Nearby Lobster Pounds
Although not directly in Ellsworth, nearby there are a ton of Lobster Pounds. A Lobster Pound is a casual lobster shack that serves fresh seafood dishes. You can find large salt water pots over small fires, outdoor picnic tables, causal but friendly service and of course amazing lobster rolls!
Our favorite lobster pound had to be Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. It was the perfect stop on the way home from a long day of hiking Acadia National Park. Trenton Bridge Lobster has all the classics as well as take home lobster by the pound (fresh of cooked) to have your own lobster feed at home! At Trenton Bridge they don’t call it Lobster Rolls but Lobster Sandwiches. Lobster sandwiches are served on two slices of white bread versus fancy buttery roll. We grabbed a beer and some chips and headed out to one of the side building picnic tables for a beautiful bay views.
Some other notable lobster pounds include: Thurston’s Lobster Pound, C-Rays Lobster, The Travelin Lobster and this adorable unnamed Lobster Pound just outside Acadia National Park with the cutest sea booey collection on the exterior (Instagram Heaven!)

Antique Shops Galore
I am always down to hunt for old treasures, even on vacation. Good thing Ellsworth and the surrounding areas have tons of cute shops and antique stores to explore. My favorite had to have been Old Whitney House Antiques located in the a beautiful Victorian Home. Other antique/cute shops we stopped at included Country Store Antiques (located in an old barn!), Country Keepsakes (grab a photo with the Squatch!) and Maines Own Treats (the most amazing blueberry preserves and syrup),
LLBean Outlet Store
The Hubs and I love our LLBEAN and went a little nuts at the flagship store in Freeport, ME on our way to Ellsworth (recap here). We were delighted to find a LLBEAN Outlet in Ellsworth to snag up some last minute outdoor gear. This place is big for an outlet store and has every LLBEAN department you can think of. It too everything in me not to buy another set of moccasin slippers or a canvas bean bag. So many great finds you guys! We spent a very long time inside digging through bins, etc trying to find hidden deals.
Great Location to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and More!
Probably one of the best reasons to stay in Ellsworth is the proximity to so many different sites; Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Green Lake (all about 30 mins) and more.
