If you could describe in one word the feeling when cracking open a cold beer after a long, hard day of work; that word would be ‘attaboy.’ A pat on the back for a job well done. That is the message of one of Downtown Frederick’s newest Breweries, Attaboy Beer.
A few weekends ago I headed to Attaboy Beer (right near Carroll Creek!) for a flight and a tour of the production area.
The hubs and I arrived mid-day and the brewery was already packed! The building was full of people from all walks of life including families with children (this place is very kid friendly!) which I loved. They even have a little snack cart (chips, cookies, crackers, etc) that is on the honor system; along with various food vendors that make an appearance depending on the day of the week.
We started with our flight of the Rudd (strong golden ale), Creek Life Amarillo (extra pale ale), Radness (West Coast IPA), Lunch Break (patersbier), Creek Life Citra (extra pale ale). I loved them all but especially the Creek Life Amarillo, Creek Life Citra and the Lunch Break!
Carly, one of the owners (also owned with her husband, Brian), was nice enough to give us a quick tour of the production area and a little overview of how the brewery came to be. Here is the short version- The couple met on a blind date, decided to quit their day jobs in California and start their own brewery. They were originally looking to open a brewery in Baltimore, but the building lease fell through. Their friend suggested Frederick and here they are! It was meant to be! You can read more about the back story- here.
The aspect of the production tour that really jumped out at me was the awesome shipping container. In the tasting area you can see the taps coming out from the container. We thought this was just a cool industrial touch but it also has function! The container acts as the beer cooler and is temperature controlled. So much cooler than a standard walk in refrigerator.
Attaboy has been open less than 6 months and it is already killing it! The merchandise is amazing- I love their pre washed navy beer shirts! and I cannot get enough of the awesome retro beer labels.
Have you heard of crowlers? No not growlers.. crowlers! They are like growlers but in 32 ounce cans. I would be lying if I told you we did not take one home with us!
